Translator / Interpreter - Delegation of the European Union to Libya


The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 28 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation to Libya represents the European Union (EU). It works closely with all of the EU member countries who have diplomatic representation in Libya.

By engaging with political actors, the media, academics, business circles, civil society and citizens, the Delegation raises awareness of EU issues and concerns, and promote a stronger partnership between the EU and Libya.

The 4 main tasks:

  • represent EU interests;
  • promote cooperation with Libya;
  • support Libya’s stability and its democratic transition;
  • ensure EU cooperation benefits those most in need.

 

We offer

We offer a post of Translator / Interpreter . Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation. Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy a specific job function as Translator / Interpreter – this job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. Under this job function the successful candidate will serve as technical and support staff to the Political, Press and Information section under the supervision and responsibility of the relevant head of section.  The selected candidate can expect to work on Arabic/English translation of letters, articles, reports, legal texts, or similar. The selected candidate will also support the EU Delegation’s staff as interpreter during meetings with Libyan and other stakeholders on a variety of issues related to the Libyan conflict and the EU’s technical cooperation with Libya. Finally, the candidate could become involved in assisting the EU Delegation in its communication activities – especially its online communication in Arabic – as well as any other relevant tasks to support the Delegation’s work and assigned to the candidate.

 

The EU delegation’s size is +/- 40 people (gender balanced team). The place of employment is Tunisia. The post is within Group 1 and the starting basic monthly salary is 4.828 TND, for a total of 40 hours per week.

 

The initial contract will have the duration of one year, renewable.

Selection Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Medically fit to perform the required duties;
  2. Enjoy civil rights and permits for employment under local law;
  3. Fluency in English (spoken and written) and official Arabic;
  4. University degree in a relevant area;

 

The following will be considered as assets:

  1. Diploma in translation/interpretation, literature or other humanistic studies;
  2. Experience in an International Organisation or Diplomatic Mission;
  3. Fluency in French or another EU language;
  4. Excellent oral and written presentation skills; Good IT skills required;
  5. Specialist knowledge (know what): Translation, interpretation, good writing skills in especially Arabic for communication on social media;
  6. Technical knowledge (Know How): Ability to write and speak clearly and concisely in Arabic and English;
  7. Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, national counterparts; donor agencies, other stakeholders and ability to adapt well in a multi-cultural environment;
  8. Personal initiative and ability to focus on priorities and meet deadlines;
  9. A high degree of integrity and the ability to deal with confidential information is required.

The procedure   

After the deadline for applications, the applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee set up for this purpose. The Selection Committee will prepare a short-list of candidates who are considered to be the most suitable for the post. The short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment phase which will include an interview and possibly a written test – during this phase, the Selection Committee will assess the suitability of the candidates for the post.

The candidates who have not been short-listed will not be contacted individually; however, the Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this Vacancy Notice to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed.
